LEARNING TO LOVE

“If one part (of the body) hurts, every other part is involved in the hurt…If one part flourishes, every other part enters into the exuberance.” – 1 Cor 12:26

LEARNING TO LOVE is a video series that was created to help those in ministry better understand the special needs population and their families. Through starting conversations with those closest to the special needs community, we hope to bring awareness, break down barriers, and learn to love them better.

EPISODES

EPISODE 1: Physical Disabilities

80% of families with special needs children do not attend church. We sit down with Major Nancy Helms of The Salvation Army and Jennifer Felix of Crossroads Church to understand why this is and how we can do better.

EPISODE 2: Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder is one of the fastest growing diagnoses but is one of the most misunderstood. We talk with Chris Toy & Captain Christina Arnold to break down myths and gain a better understanding.

EPISODE 3: ADHD

ADHD is one of the most prevalent cognitive disorders but as leaders, we don’t always know what that means or how to respond when one of our youth needs our support. In this episode, we talk with Mathijs Arens about his experience with ADHD and Kelly Rodriguez, MFT.

EPISODE 4: Anxiety

The number of teenagers with Anxiety Disorders is on the rise across the nation. To get a better understanding of what it is and how the body of Christ can be a safe and supportive place, we talk with Lanayah Wild and Thandiwe Gregory, LCSW.

EPISODE 5: Depression

Over time, the rate of teens developing depression and experiencing depressive episodes has been increasing. To help build a better understanding of depression and how we can be more proactive in our care for those entrusted in our ministry, we met with Summar Bussey and Jaymi Matranga, MSW.

EPISODE 6: Suicidal Ideation

Thoughts of suicide and navigating a suicide crisis can create great panic and fears in those impacted by it, so rather than avoid the discomfort and fear, we strive to learn and de-stigmatize suicidal ideation and suicide by hearing from Emily Anderson and S. Blake Lanier, LCSW.
